How they work

Generally a grower will initiate a CSA by seeking a group of subscribers who wish to regularly source fresh, organically grown vegetables and other produce. Many also are specifically interested in sourcing direct from growers.

Growers may request that subscribers pay anything from one week in advance to the whole season in advance. How the box contents are determined can also vary between different single-farm CSA's – commonly the weekly boxes comprise of whatever the grower harvests each week (with the grower of course trying to ensure that there is sufficient variety in the boxes). A 'swap table' can be used, where people can swap items they do not want for items they prefer.
