Case Study - NWEC

The North-West Environment Centre (NWEC) CSA began after gaining seed funding from a local council, and gained about 20 subscribers in a short space of time, mainly from conducting a letter box drop.

Three growers were identified as wanting to be involved, on the basis of each individually supplying boxes to three different groups of subscribers. In effect therefore, three separate CSAs were created, with NWEC helping with initial administration and organization. NWEC produced a single newsletter that was distributed to the three groups, and conducted a survey to gain feedback after the first season.

Two of the CSAs are now operating independently, the third is not currently operating due to reasons not related to the CSA.

The main challenge was to get subscribers more involved in supporting the CSA, and for growers to try and extend the season beyond January to May, due to the cool climate in North-West Tasmania.

Both growers are currently increasing production using polytunnels and/or greenhouses to help extend the growing season.
